Deacons (Consists of both males and females I Timothy 3:11-12; Romans 16:1-2).

The Bible calls administrative leaders “deacons” which means “servant.”  This office was established in the church in Acts 6:1-6 so that the elders/pastors or apostles could focus on teaching the Word of God and on prayer.  The primary role of the Deacon is to meet the physical needs of the congregation through the exercise of their administration and organization.
 

I.  The Biblical pattern for the Deacon:

  1. Deacons were appointed in the local churches (Phil. 1:1; Acts 6:1-6)
  2. Deacons were the consistent Biblical pattern of church helpers and administrative assistants  (Romans 16:1-2; I Timothy 3:8-13)
     

II.  The Biblical role of the Deacon:

  1. They are responsible to help the elders/pastors care for the finances of the church (I Timothy 3:8)
  2. They are responsible to help the elders/pastors carry out administrative responsibilities (I Timothy 3:12)
  3. They are responsible to help the elders/pastors by administrating and organizing specific care and outreach ministries (Acts 6:1-6)
     

III.  The Biblical Qualifications of a Deacon:

Romans 16:1-2 – He or she must:

• Be willing to help many people

 

I Timothy 3:8-13 – He or she must:

• Be worthy of respect
• Be sincere
• Not indulge in too much wine
• Not pursue dishonest gain
• Hold to the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience
• Be tested first
• Not talk maliciously
• Be temperate
• Be trustworthy
• Have only one spouse
• Manage his or hers own household well
• Serve well
